Media Blog project #2
Topic #4: The movie that I will be undergoing is Baywatch. This movie stands out to me because it has some of my favorite actors. The movie has action but also has a lot of funny humor that really stood out to me. The actors they chose really played their role good.
After doing research on Baywatch I discovered information I once didn't know. The Baywatch the starred Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron was based off a series that was once on NBC. It had a similar story, pretty much lifeguards keeping their beach safe. The NBC series had 11 seasons. When they took actors for Baywatch the movie they had to each play the role of someone that was on that series. This is fascinating to me because I thought this Baywatch was an original that they just made up. Baywatch is a group of lifeguards proving they don't have to wear a police badge to solve crimes and keep their beach safe. They are much more than that. On the weekend box office, Baywatch was ranked 3rd with 23.1 million for the weekend. We know Dwayne Johnson who is also known as The Rock who has 11 wins and 52 nominations. He is an actor, a producer, and a retired professional wrestler. The other main actor Zac Efron is known for his 28 wins and 33 nominations. He is well known for his acting in all the Highschool Musical movies.
I think a lot of movies that The Rock is in is an action genre due to his muscularity features. They use it to his advantage. For example, in the movie Jumanji he plays his part of being big and muscular to his advantage. This drama/action movie has a lot of humor in it and I feel like most other drama/action movies that I have watched don't really have a lot of humor. Just most action based.
This movie is trendy in our culture because of it actors that we are really familiar with. The humor is easy for all age groups and easy to pick up. I also think they picked actors with personalities that people like. The target audience is anyone who likes action but also humorous movies. Something that isn't serious all the time. In some of the clips, The Rock is always making fun of Zac Efron. He calls him "Jonas Brother" "Highschool Musical" and names that the people he was calling could take offense to. He was doing it in a funny way but it could be interpreted wrong. The stereotypes are the girl lifeguard and how they run in slow motion and how the nerdy kid is more of a tech geek and doesn't do the dangerous stuff that the other lifeguards do. He just works with computers.
I think its strengths include picking the right actors for each role and ones that people are familiar with. I think some parts were corny and the jokes they made were my humor but they might not be someone's else's humor. The movie was really good overall. It had a good plot and after reading that is was once a tv show I think they did a good job of integrating it into a full-on movie. I think its a memorable movie because it made me laugh a lot and it really kept me intrigued the whole time. I read a post on Dwayne Johnson snapping back at the critics and tweeting that "Oh boy, critics had their venom & knives ready. Fans LOVE the movie. Huge positive scores. Big disconnect w/ critics & people. #Baywatch'. " The cinema score gave them B+ overall and said the film was a flailing self-parody at best.
One of the movie producers was Dwayne Johnson. He has 112 million followers. Id say The Rock is a pretty likable guy that people love and enjoy seeing on the screen. Id say this movie is good no matter what the critics say. This was a fun and laughed filled movie that kept you on the edge of your seat.
